Röki was well-received when it was released in 2020, garnering several awards nominations such as “Best Debut Game” from The Game Awards and British Academy Game Awards (BAFTA). It was also nominated for “Best British Game” by the BAFTA, an impressive feat for a debut title from indie developers.

Now, Röki will be expanding from its Switch and PC debut and will be coming to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on October 28th. In Röki, players will be playing Tove who is dropped into a fairytale winter land where monsters exist. She will meet these monsters, find mysterious objects, solve puzzles, and draw maps throughout her adventure. Seemingly in the forefront of all that, however, is the narrative that looks to dig deeper into Tove’s past and her memories to learn the truth.
Interestingly enough, Röki will only be coming to next-gen consoles in October. From what was shown Röki, and from the fact that it plays on the Nintendo Switch, it’s an odd choice for the title to not be releasing on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Röki is an indie title that received very positive reviews last year and could potentially appeal to those with previous-gen consoles.
Röki has a vibrant, bold, and fairytale-like aesthetic to it which really makes the title visually pop off the screen. Although not seemingly appearing as a horror title, there are certainly some creepy elements in Röki. Despite that, Röki looks visually stunning and although it doesn’t have the most realistic graphics, it will most likely take advantage of the next-gen console’s power with framerate, and stability. That being said, from the looks of it, Röki doesn’t appear to be a large-scale adventure title that could only run on these next-gen consoles.
It’s a bit odd that Röki will be limited in terms of where it can play. It’s certainly a title that can run on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One but is seemingly not coming to either console even though next-gen consoles are still difficult for many people to acquire. That being said, this could likely be some limitation in studios’ resources. It’s still more than possible that it can be ported to previous-gen consoles later down the road further expanding its audience.
Röki will be released on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on October 28th.
