Flash forward about two years, and Rogue Legacy 2 has just received a full 1.0 release, and if the staggeringly high critical reviews are anything to go by, it seems as though it fulfilled its promise. One of the key improvements Rogue Legacy 2 has made over its predecessor is the introduction of 15 character classes, each one boasting unique weapons and abilities. Though they all have their uses, the Pirate class is one of the more intriguing options.

The Pirate’s Weapon
As is the case with each class in Rogue Legacy 2, the Pirate class has its own unique weapon. Where the Knight has a sword, and the Mage wields sorceries, the Pirate relies on a gigantic cannon to get the job done.
This cannon acts as both a melee weapon and a ranged weapon simultaneously. Players can swing the cannon in a wide arc in front of them, damaging their opponents while also inflicting some serious knockback. This melee attack can then be immediately followed up by a powerful ranged shot from the cannon.
With the Pirate class, every attack made while dashing is a Skill Crit, meaning it delivers higher damage. This includes both the cannon’s melee and ranged attack, which both dish out more damage if the player executes the attack while dashing. While the Pirate’s cannon is pretty good overall, it’s made even more effective with the Heavy Stone Bargain Relic, which increases damage output by 100% for both the ranged and melee attack.
The Pirate’s Abilities
The Pirate’s passive ability is a fairly decent, albeit simple one. Called “Cheap Shot,” this ability gives the Pirate class a 10% boost to both spell and weapon critical damage, which is a pretty helpful bonus to have, especially during the early-game of Rogue Legacy 2.
Each class in Rogue Legacy 2 has a specific Talent. These Talents range from summonable platforms, to additional blocking moves, to a dodge roll. The Pirate’s Talent foregoes defense and instead favors all-out attack. The Pirate’s Talent also lets them summon a large, floating pirate ship, making for an interesting and unique ability.
When summoned, this pirate ship will fire a series of cannonballs in a forward-facing line. While the pirate ship’s default mode has it remain stationary, the player can hop in and re-position it, all the while continuing to attack like normal. By pressing the summon button again, the pirate ship can be launched forward, detonating on impact, causing some damage and applying the Burn status effect.
Though the pirate ship only lasts for eight seconds, the damage it dishes out can be pretty helpful in Rogue Legacy 2’s tougher fights, in particular its boss fights. And with its secondary bomb-like attack, crafty players can make the most of the Talent, seeking out some substantial damage before it disappears.
